How to Choose a Cabinet Maker in Newport Beach, CA

Eleven checks you can run before signing anything, and not one of them depends on reviews or on a sales conversation. The licence is a public record, the deposit cap is statute, the quality tests are published with numbers, and the questions that separate a maker from a reseller are four sentences long.

  • C-6 licence, checkable online
  • Deposit capped at $1,000
  • Three days to cancel, with one exception
  • Twelve items in a comparable quote

Check one: the licence, which takes a minute

Ask for the licence number and the classification, then look it up yourself. The classification to look for is C-6, Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry.

The state licence board publishes both a description of the classification and an online lookup. Checking is free, it takes under a minute, and it confirms two things a card in a wallet does not: that the licence is current, and that it covers this kind of work.

The unlicensed exemption is narrower than most people assume. State law permits unlicensed work only where the aggregate contract price for labour, materials and all other items is less than one thousand dollars, the work is of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature, and it does not require a building permit. The statute then voids the exemption in three further cases: where the work is part of a larger operation, where a job is split into sub-thousand-dollar contracts to fit under the threshold, and for anyone who advertises as though licensed.

At the published Los Angeles band of $500 to $1,500 per linear foot installed, even a small 15-foot galley kitchen is $7,500 to $22,500. There is no honest version of an unlicensed quote at that scale.

Check two: the deposit, which the statute fixes

The downpayment may not exceed one thousand dollars or ten percent of the contract amount, whichever is less, so on any kitchen above a ten-thousand-dollar contract the legal deposit is one thousand dollars flat.

That arithmetic is worth working through, because the ten percent figure is the one people remember and it almost never applies to a kitchen.

The deposit cap applied to published Newport Beach kitchen prices
Contract valueTen percent would beLegal cap, the lesser of the twoCap as a share of the job
$7,500, a 15-foot kitchen at the band's lower end$750$75010.0 percent
$10,000$1,000$1,00010.0 percent
$12,500, a 25-foot kitchen at the band's lower end$1,250$1,0008.0 percent
$22,500, a 15-foot kitchen at the band's upper end$2,250$1,0004.4 percent
$37,500, a 25-foot kitchen at the band's upper end$3,750$1,0002.7 percent
$52,500, a 35-foot kitchen at the band's upper end$5,250$1,0001.9 percent

Arithmetic shown rather than asserted. The statutory cap is the lesser of $1,000 or 10 percent, so above a $10,000 contract the flat $1,000 binds. Kitchen values from the published Los Angeles per-linear-foot band.

The same section carries a second protection that matters more than the deposit cap over the life of a job: apart from the downpayment, a contractor shall neither request nor accept payment that exceeds the value of the work performed or material delivered. Payment follows delivered value. A large payment before anything has been built or delivered is outside the section.

Check three: the cancellation window, and the showroom exception

Three business days to cancel from receiving a signed and dated copy containing the notice, five days for a senior citizen, and no window at all where the contract was negotiated at the contractor's place of business.

The written-contract requirement itself applies above an aggregate contract price of five hundred dollars, and the statute is explicit that a home improvement contract and any changes to the contract shall be in writing and signed by the parties to the contract prior to the commencement of work. A change agreed verbally mid-job is outside that requirement.

A plane and timber on a workbench, the kind of work a cabinet maker does rather than resells
Four questions separate a maker from a reseller, and none of them is about price: where the boxes are built, whether finishing is in-house, the slide load rating as a number, and the hinge count on a tall door.

Check four: quote the published standard, not a certification

Ask whether the cabinets meet the published figures rather than whether the shop holds a certification. The figures are specific and any shop can be asked about them.

Published figures to quote at a cabinet shop
What it testsThe published figureWhy you care
Shelf and cabinet bottom loading15 pounds per square foot for 7 days, deflection no more than 0.0625 inch per lineal foot between supports and 0.25 inch maximum between any two supportsA sagging shelf is the most common visible cabinet failure, and it is a span-and-material question
Wall cabinet mounting600 pounds up to 36 inches wide, 800 pounds from 36 to 60 inches, 20 pounds per inch of width above that, with no failure in the cabinet or the mounting systemThe mounting system is included in the pass condition, which is where real failures happen
Base front joint loading250 pounds to the rail, or 200 pounds, with joints that must not open in serviceAn opening front joint is the failure that makes a kitchen look cheap after five years
Door racking and hinge loading65 pounds at 10 inches from the hinge line, 10 cycles from 90 degrees, held weighted 10 minutes, shape unchangedThis is the test a tall door on two hinges fails
Door operation25,000 cycles at 20 per minute, with sag no more than 0.065 inch and no loosening of the hardware attachment25,000 cycles is roughly seven years of opening a cabinet ten times a day
Drawer operation25,000 cycles at 15 pounds per square foot, each cycle opening the drawer two-thirds of its extensionAsk for the slide load rating as a number and compare it with this
Chemical resistance of the finishNine household substances including coffee at 115 degrees Fahrenheit and 100-proof alcohol, read at 24 hours, with mustard read at one hourThis is what a real kitchen does to a finish in a normal week
Water holdout of interior surfacesA just-boiled ceramic cup stood upside down on a shelf for 24 hours with no delamination, swelling or whiteningEspecially relevant in a house that stands empty and unnoticed for part of the year
Toe spaceAt least 2 inches deep and 3 inches high where there is a toe kickA small thing that is specified in the standard and routinely ignored
Interior exposed surfacesFree of saw marks and poor workmanship, and covered with a decorative film or paper or at least one coat of clear or pigmented finish; undersides of wall cabinet bottoms count as interior exposed surfacesThe undersides of your wall cabinets are at eye level when you are at the worktop

From the published performance and construction standard for kitchen and vanity cabinets, whose own scope states it is a performance and construction standard only and does not specify design or materials. No certification claim is made for any shop on this site.

Check five: the four questions that separate a maker from a reseller

Where are the carcasses built, is the finishing in-house or subcontracted, what is the slide load rating as a number, and how many hinges does a tall door get.

A maker answers all four without hesitating, because those are daily decisions in a workshop. A reseller answers the first two vaguely and the last two by looking something up. Neither is disqualifying: a good reseller of a good product can deliver an excellent kitchen. What matters is knowing which you are talking to, because a reseller cannot change a dimension the manufacturer does not offer, and in an irregular Newport Beach room that is the constraint that decides the result.

The tier question that follows from this is on the custom against semi-custom and stock guide.

Check six: ask what the sink base is made of

It is the single most diagnostic question you can ask, because it is the cabinet most likely to fail and the one the published standard allows to be built with the least.

The standard's construction requirements state that base cabinets shall be enclosed with backs, bottoms and sides, and then exempt the sink base and the kitchen sink front from needing a back, and the sink-front unit from needing a bottom. So the cabinet most exposed to water is explicitly permitted to be built with the least enclosure.

A shop that answers with a material, a thickness and a word about edge sealing is a shop that has thought about this. A shop that says "all our boxes are the same" has not been asked before. One published lender's life table is the only one of four that splits cabinet life by material, at 20 years for wood construction against 15 for particleboard, and the sink base is where that difference is most likely to be realised. The material comparison is on the box materials guide.

Check seven: the twelve-item quote

A quote with these twelve items can be compared with another quote that has them. A quote that says "custom kitchen" and gives a number cannot be compared with anything.

  • The linear footage, as measured by whoever is quoting, stated as a number
  • Carcass material per cabinet, with the sink base called out explicitly
  • Back construction: a full panel or a thin insert
  • Drawer box construction and the slide load rating, given as a number
  • Hinge type and the count per door, with tall doors identified
  • Door style and overlay: full, partial or inset
  • Interior finish, including whether wall cabinet undersides are finished
  • Finished ends and fillers, counted and priced, with a scribe allowance for walls that are not plumb
  • The finishing system, clear or pigmented, in-house or subcontracted
  • Installation as its own line, with tear-out stated separately
  • The licence number and classification, so you can check it
  • The deposit, which California caps at $1,000 or ten percent of the contract, whichever is less

The eighth item earns its place in this city specifically. In the older neighbourhoods, half an inch of variation over ten feet is an ordinary condition, so fillers and scribe allowances are not contingencies but line items.

Checks eight to eleven: the four Newport Beach questions

Four additional questions apply here that would not matter in most markets, and all four are consequences of the city's geography and age.

Eight: access, priced as its own line

Access varies more inside Newport Beach than in most whole counties. A delivery to a Santa Ana Heights driveway is an ordinary delivery. A delivery to Balboa Island runs over one short bridge or a three-car ferry. A Lido Isle house is reached over one small bridge onto streets platted in the 1920s. An ocean-front block in West Newport may front a 2.9-mile pedestrian and cycle boardwalk that no vehicle uses. A Newport Center condominium is reached through a booked service lift. A quote that prices all of those identically has not looked at the site.

Nine: the lead-safe process, as its own line

61.0 percent of this city's homes were built in 1979 or earlier, with the largest single decade being 1970 to 1979 at 22.3 percent of units. The federal rule names built-in cabinets, bathroom vanities and counter tops in its own component list and is triggered by disturbing more than 6 square feet of painted interior surface per room, with the full surface area of a removed component counting. Ask whether testing is included, who does the containment, and what the verification is. The detail is on the lead paint guide.

Ten: the exposure assumption, stated

The city is 55.04 percent water by area, with eight artificial islands and roughly 9,000 boats, and exposure varies enormously from a bay-front lot to an inland street. Ask which assumption the hardware specification has made. A corrosion-rated specification is the right money on Balboa Island and waste in Santa Ana Heights, and an honest quote says which one it has priced. The argument is on the salt air guide.

Eleven: whether the house stands empty

48.3 percent of this city's vacant housing units are seasonal, against 33.5 percent across the wider region. A house that is closed for months tracks outdoor humidity, where the published band for the nearest listed station runs from 9.4 percent in January to 11.7 percent in June, and a 20-inch inset door moves 0.162 inch in sugar maple across it against a nominal 0.0625 inch reveal. Tell the shop how the house is used, and expect the overlay recommendation and the adjustment-visit schedule to change accordingly.

One more thing: who is handling the permits

Cabinetry is finish work and needs no permit. The services around it do, and somebody has to own that.

The City of Newport Beach states that adding a permanently wired light fixture requires a permit, and that moving or adding an electrical outlet requires a permit, under the code editions adopted by Ordinance No. 2025-23 on 4 October 2025, effective 1 January 2026. The City also notes that inspectors respond to requests from the contractor or builder and will not visit without an appointment, usually needing one or two days' notice.

So the question to ask is simple: who is pulling the permit, who is requesting the inspections, and where in the programme does the inspection sit. The answer determines whether your cabinets arrive before or after the wall is closed up. The full permit picture is on the permits and code guide.

Four fields. Somebody comes out to your place in Newport Beach, measures the room properly, and sends back an itemised scope with a real number on it. Nothing is committed until you say so.

Eleven checks, none of which can be faked

A licence lookup is a public record. A deposit cap is a statute. A published load figure is either met or it is not. Build your decision on those and reviews become a tiebreaker rather than the evidence.

  • Every cabinet dimensioned off your own walls, not off a plan drawing
  • Box material called out cabinet by cabinet, with plywood specified under the sink
  • The CSLB licence number printed on the paperwork so you can check it yourself
  • A scribe allowance, because a 1960s Newport Beach wall is never plumb

Choosing a cabinet maker: frequently asked questions

What licence should a Newport Beach cabinet maker hold?

C-6, Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry, and the number can be checked online in under a minute. California permits unlicensed work only where the aggregate contract price for labour, materials and all other items is less than one thousand dollars, the work is of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature, and it does not require a building permit. A kitchen in this market is far above that, so there is no honest version of an unlicensed kitchen quote here.

How much deposit can a contractor legally take?

One thousand dollars or ten percent of the contract amount, whichever is less. Because the cap is the lesser of the two, the flat one thousand dollars binds on every contract above ten thousand dollars. On a 25-linear-foot kitchen at the published Los Angeles band of $12,500 to $37,500, that is between 2.7 and 8.0 percent of the job, not ten percent. A request for a third up front is outside what the section permits.

Do I get a cooling-off period?

Usually three business days, and there is one exception that catches people out. A home improvement contract above an aggregate price of five hundred dollars must be in writing and signed before work commences, and you may cancel by midnight of the third business day after receiving a signed and dated copy containing the notice, with five days for a senior citizen. The notice is not required where the contract is negotiated at the contractor's place of business, so a showroom signing carries no window.

What happens to my money if I cancel?

It comes back within ten days. The statute provides that on a valid cancellation the contractor must return to you anything you paid within ten days of receiving the notice of cancellation. That is the practical reason to put a cancellation in writing with a date rather than relying on a phone call.

What is the single most useful question to ask a cabinet shop?

What is the sink base made of. It is the cabinet most likely to see water, the one the published construction standard explicitly exempts from needing a back and a bottom, and the one whose failure starts a chain reaction in the run above it. A shop that answers that question precisely, naming the material and the sealing, is a shop that thinks about cabinets rather than about kitchens.

How do I tell a maker from a reseller?

Ask four questions: where the carcasses are built, whether the finishing is in-house or subcontracted, what the slide load rating is as a number, and how many hinges a tall door gets. A maker answers all four without checking. A reseller answers the first two vaguely and the last two by looking something up, which is not disqualifying but is worth knowing, because a reseller cannot change a dimension that the manufacturer does not offer.

Should I ask about a quality certification?

Ask about the published standard rather than about a certification, because the standard gives you numbers and the certification gives you a logo. The published performance and construction standard for kitchen and vanity cabinets sets a 15-pound-per-square-foot shelf load for seven days, a 600-pound wall cabinet mounting load, 25,000 door and drawer cycles and a set of finish tests. Any shop can be asked whether its cabinets meet those figures.

What should the written quote contain?

Twelve items, and a quote with all twelve can be compared with another quote that has them. The linear footage as measured, carcass material per cabinet with the sink base called out, back construction, drawer box construction and slide load rating, hinge type and count per door, door style and overlay, interior finish, finished ends and fillers counted with a scribe allowance, the finishing system, installation as its own line with tear-out separate, the licence number and classification, and the deposit.

What should a Newport Beach quote say about the lead rule?

Whether testing is included, who is doing the containment, and what the verification is, as its own line. 61.0 percent of this city's homes were built in 1979 or earlier, and the federal rule names built-in cabinets, vanities and counter tops in its own component list with a trigger of 6 square feet of painted interior surface per room. A quote silent on it in a pre-1978 house is either absorbing a real cost invisibly or not doing the work.

What about access, in a city like this one?

Ask for it as a separate line, because access in Newport Beach varies more than anywhere comparable. A delivery to a Santa Ana Heights driveway and a delivery to a Balboa Island house over a bridge or a three-car ferry are not the same job, and nor is a boardwalk-fronted house in West Newport or a Newport Center condominium reached through a booked service lift. A quote that prices access identically across the city has not visited the site.

Are reviews useful?

They are one input among several and they are the easiest to manufacture, which is why this guide leads on licence records, published standards and statutory protections instead. The checks in this guide are the ones that cannot be faked: a licence lookup is a public record, the deposit cap is statute, and a published test figure is either met or not.
