The short answer for a Newport Beach garage
Metal garage cabinets fail where their coating breaks; wood and board garage cabinets fail where water reaches a raw edge. In a salt-air garage, choose the material whose weak point you can check and control. For steel, that means a published rust test result and care with scratches and cut edges. For board, it means sealed edges, a carcass held off the slab, and corrosion-resistant hinges, slides and screws.
| Steel (powder-coated or painted) | Wood, plywood or melamine-faced board | |
|---|---|---|
| Where failure starts | A scratch, chip or cut edge through the coating, then rust creeping under it | A raw or chipped edge, or a bottom panel standing in water, then swelling |
| The metal at risk | The whole box | Hinges, slides, shelf pins, screws and handles |
| Published test to ask for | KCMA A161.1-2022 section 9.6: 288 hours at 100% humidity, no blisters, creep of 1.6 mm or less | Edge banding on every cut edge, and the hardware maker's corrosion rating |
| Wall-hung load | Set by the mounting: 600 lb on a cabinet up to 36 in. wide in the published test | The same test and the same rule: studs or masonry, never drywall anchors |
| Repair | Touch up a scratch before it creeps; a rusted panel is hard to restore | Re-band an edge or swap a door; a swollen bottom means a new carcass |
| Looks | Industrial, uniform colours | Any colour or veneer, matches the house |
Test figures from KCMA A161.1-2022. Section 9.6 is written for metal cabinets only, which is why it is the benchmark for steel and not for board.
That is the whole comparison in one line: a steel box is all metal, so its coating is the specification; a board box has very little metal, so its edges and its hardware are the specification. Either can last decades in a Newport Beach garage, and either can be ruined in a few years by the wrong detail.
Why salt air changes the metal vs wood question here
Newport Beach is more than half water: 29.13 of its 52.92 square miles, 55.04 percent of the city. Newport Harbor alone holds roughly 9,000 boats. A garage on the Peninsula, Balboa Island or in West Newport sits a short walk from open water, with a door the width of the room that opens straight onto the street air.

The garage is also the one room in the house with no climate control. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's outdoor moisture table for Los Angeles, the nearest published record, runs from 9.4 percent in January to 11.7 percent in June, and the same chapter warns that early-morning humidity "may occasionally reach 100%", with condensation on surfaces. Condensation on a cool morning is what turns a small coating scratch on a steel door into a rust line, and what wicks into a raw particleboard edge.
One more local fact tips the balance toward specifying carefully: 48.3 percent of Newport Beach's vacant housing units are seasonal. A garage closed up for months holds still, humid air with no one opening a door to dry it out, which is the condition the rust test imitates.
Metal garage cabinets: what to check before buying
Ask for the section 9.6 rust test result, look hard at the cut edges and fasteners, and plan for the scratches a garage will give the doors.
- Ask whether the line has passed KCMA A161.1 section 9.6, the 288-hour humidity test with a scratch through to bare metal. A seller who has never heard of it has not tested for it.
- Look at the inside of a door and the back edge of a shelf. Coating that thins out or stops at a folded edge is where rust starts on this coast.
- Check the screws, hinges and leveling feet, not only the box. A coated box with plain steel fasteners rusts at the fasteners first.
- Keep touch-up paint in the garage and use it on the first chip. Rust creep from an untreated scratch is exactly what the test measures.
- Stand base units on adjustable feet, not on the slab, so water from a car or a hose drains away from the bottom edge.
Wood and board garage cabinets: what to check before buying
Every cut edge banded or sealed, the carcass raised off the slab, and every piece of metal chosen for salt air.

The board itself is less important than its edges. Melamine-faced board, moisture-resistant MDF and plywood all work in a Newport Beach garage when the edges are sealed; raw particleboard does not, because water enters at the edge and the core swells. One Los Angeles cabinet maker's published guide puts its budget tier of particleboard, MDF or laminate boxes at a 5 to 10 year life and plywood or veneer at 15 to 25 years, and the garage is where that gap shows first.
The composite boards in a cabinet also have to meet the formaldehyde limits in the California Green Building Standards Code, which Newport Beach adopted as Municipal Code chapter 15.11: 0.09 parts per million for particleboard and 0.11 for MDF. That matters less in an open garage than in a bedroom, and it is still worth seeing on the paperwork.
Load and fixing, which matter more than the material
The published wall cabinet test applies 600 pounds to a mounted cabinet up to 36 inches wide and 800 pounds to a wall-hung base between 36 and 60 inches, and a failure of the mounting counts as a failure of the cabinet. A steel cabinet on drywall anchors fails that the same way a wood one does. In a garage, fix through a hanging rail into studs, or into block or concrete with anchors rated for the load.
Shelves follow the same logic. The published shelf test holds 15 pounds per square foot for seven days and allows 0.0625 inch of sag per foot between supports. Paint cans and boxed fasteners load a garage shelf well past that, so on either material shorter spans or a stiffened front edge keep a shelf straight.
Which to choose for your garage

| Your garage | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few blocks from the water, door often open | Board carcasses with sealed edges and corrosion-resistant hardware, or steel with a section 9.6 result | The most salt in the air; the weak point has to be one you can control |
| Mostly a workshop, heavy tools | Steel tool storage and a braced bench, board for the wall runs | Impact and weight favour steel; long wall runs favour board |
| Closed up for months each year | Board with sealed edges, or steel kept touched up, plus sealed containers inside | Still, humid air for weeks is the rust test condition |
| Wants to match the house | Painted or veneered board | Any colour or finish, and the same look as the laundry or mudroom |

The deeper corrosion question, including outdoor kitchens and what "marine-grade" really means, is in the marine-grade cabinets and salt air guide, and hinge and slide ratings are on the cabinet hardware page.
