What a walk-in closet costs, by what goes inside it
A basic laminate walk-in of 6 by 6 feet is about $2,250, a larger 33-linear-foot walk-in system is $4,000 to $8,000, and fully custom closet cabinetry is $500 to $1,500 per linear foot installed. The first two are from Thumbtack's national closet cost guide, updated 8 July 2026; the third is the published Los Angeles custom band from a Los Angeles cabinet maker's 2026 guide. No source publishes a closet price for Newport Beach alone, so this guide labels each figure by where it comes from.

| Building a new walk-in (three new walls) | Sometimes as much as $6,000, before the fit-out | Thumbtack, national |

Thumbtack figures are national and updated 8 July 2026. The Los Angeles band is one cabinet maker's published guide. Neither is a Newport Beach survey.
The same walk-in, priced three ways
Take the published 6 by 6 walk-in of 18 linear feet: about $2,250 in basic laminate, closer to $5,000 in a wood finish, and $9,000 to $27,000 as fully custom cabinetry at $500 to $1,500 a foot. All three are honest prices for "a walk-in closet", which is why two quotes for the same room can be ten times apart.

| Specification | Price for 18 linear feet | Per square foot of a 6 by 6 room |
|---|---|---|
| Basic white laminate system | About $2,250 | About $63 |
| Wood finish with moulding | About $5,000 | About $139 |
| Fully custom cabinetry, low end of the band | About $9,000 | About $250 |
| Fully custom cabinetry, high end of the band | About $27,000 | About $750 |
Per-square-foot figures are our arithmetic on the published examples (price divided by 36 square feet). Closets are quoted by linear foot of wall.
The per-square-foot column is there because people search for it; nobody prices a closet that way. Measure the wall, not the floor: a 6 by 6 room with a door on one side gives about 18 feet of usable wall, and that is the number a quote is built on.
What moves a walk-in closet price up or down
Drawers, finish, size and whether the room has to be built first.
| Driver | Effect | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drawers instead of shelves | Up, per drawer | Each drawer is a box, a pair of slides and a front; the published drawer test runs 25,000 cycles |
| Wood or veneer finish instead of laminate | Roughly doubles the published 6 by 6 example | Material and finishing time |
| Linear feet of wall | Up in step with length | Every published price is per foot or per size |
| An island | Substantially up | Only works where there is room to walk round it |
| Lighting | Up, plus a permit | Wired fixtures are permitted work in Newport Beach |
| Building the room itself | Up to about $6,000 more | New walls, before any fit-out |
Permits, deposits and Newport Beach rules
The shelving is finish work; the lights are not. The City of Newport Beach states that "adding a permanently wired light fixture does require a permit" and that "moving or adding an electrical outlet requires a permit". Plan closet lighting with the layout, and have it inspected before the cabinetry covers the wall.

California also caps the deposit. Business and Professions Code section 7159.5 limits a home improvement down payment to $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract, whichever is less, and any contract over $500 has to be in writing and signed before work starts. On a $4,000 closet system the most anyone may ask up front is $400.
Closet shelves are also the longest-lived cabinetry in the published tables: the NAHB study lists closet shelves as lasting a lifetime and the InterNACHI chart at 100 years or more. Drawers are the exception, because they cycle like kitchen drawers, so the slide rating is worth asking about on any quote.
